Writing for Search and AI Systems Without Chasing a New Acronym

Search is no longer only a page of blue links. People also ask questions through assistants, summaries, browsers, and tools that retrieve information from multiple sources.
That changes distribution. It does not change the foundation of useful publishing.
What remains durable
A page is easier for people and machines to use when it has:
- a stable, crawlable URL;
- a clear title and concise summary;
- a named author and publication date;
- direct answers supported by primary evidence;
- headings that reflect the actual argument;
- accessible HTML and sensible metadata;
- links to source material and related work; and
- original information worth retrieving.
These practices help traditional search, accessibility tools, archives, research assistants, and retrieval systems. None makes a model trust or cite the page.
What not to promise
Avoid claims that an AI system always prefers short paragraphs, a particular heading pattern, an author biography, or a block written to be “lifted” into an answer. Retrieval, ranking, training data, model behaviour, product interfaces, and citation policies change independently.
A model may cite a page today and omit it tomorrow. It may summarize without sending a click. It may retrieve a secondary source instead of the original. Visibility is an outcome to observe, not a property a writer can install.
Optimize the evidence, not the performance
If a piece matters:
- state the claim plainly;
- show the evidence close to the claim;
- distinguish observation, inference, and opinion;
- publish source material in inspectable formats;
- keep URLs stable when updating the work; and
- correct material errors visibly.
The Vault's Markdown source, feeds, sitemap, llms.txt, structured metadata, and provenance records follow this approach. They make the corpus easier to inspect. They do not buy placement in anyone else's answer.
The strategic conclusion
Do not write for a hypothetical machine at the expense of the person reading. Publish fewer pieces with stronger evidence, clearer ownership, and a durable source trail. If those qualities also help an AI system retrieve the work, good. The work still has to deserve the attention.
