Testing 90-Minute Focus Blocks Against Pomodoro

Reviewed July 15, 2026: This article now treats 90-minute focus blocks as a practical working experiment rather than a universal rule.
The Pomodoro Technique is simple: work for 25 minutes, take a short break, and repeat. That can help when a task feels difficult to start, when energy is low, or when the work naturally divides into small units.
I often prefer a longer block for writing, coding, and systems work. Twenty-five minutes can feel like an interruption arriving just as the problem becomes interesting.
That preference is not proof that 90 minutes is the brain's ideal interval.
Match the timer to the work
Different tasks impose different switching costs. Email triage and administrative work may tolerate short intervals. Debugging a complex interaction or developing an argument may benefit from a longer uninterrupted window. Fatigue, medication, disability, sleep, environment, experience, and personal rhythm also matter.
Instead of choosing a productivity camp, test three shapes:
- 25 minutes: useful for starting, routine work, or days with limited energy;
- 50 minutes: long enough for meaningful progress with a regular recovery point; and
- 90 minutes: useful when the task benefits from immersion and you can protect the block.
A small experiment
For two weeks, record:
- the task and block length;
- how long it took to become productively engaged;
- the concrete output completed;
- the number of avoidable interruptions;
- energy before and after; and
- whether the next session was easy to resume.
Do not measure success by how long you stayed in the chair. Measure useful output, error rate, recovery, and whether the method remains sustainable.
My practical default
For demanding work, I start with a protected block of up to 90 minutes and stop earlier if attention or quality falls. I take a real break before starting another demanding block. For shallow work or resistance, I shorten the interval.
The point is not that 90 beats 25. The point is to stop letting a generic timer overrule evidence from the work in front of you.
