Because Drift Happens™
The canonical doctrine site is becausedrifthappens.com.
Drift is the default condition of all systems.
People drift. Processes drift. Software drifts. Data drifts. Incentives drift. Documentation drifts. Teams drift. Markets drift. Decisions drift away from their original context.
Intelligent systems do not remove drift.
They can accelerate it, hide it, compound it, or make it harder to notice until the consequences are already operational.
Why This Matters
As software becomes more autonomous, connected, and decision-capable, the main challenge is no longer just building intelligent systems.
It is governing them.
Governance is not paperwork. It is not a committee. It is not a policy binder that lives somewhere outside the system.
Governance is how a system remains coherent under change.
The Working Claim
Because drift happens, intelligent systems need:
- explicit control surfaces
- reviewable authority
- provenance
- escalation paths
- recovery mechanisms
- bounded adaptation
- operational accountability
Without those things, the system may still run. It may even look productive. But it becomes harder to know whether it is still aligned with the intent, boundaries, and responsibilities it was supposed to serve.
